Newfoundland and Labrador clocks will jump forward an hour on March 11 this year, the provincial government announced Thursday.
The move — which follows a legislative change approved last fall in the house of assembly — brings the province in line with similar changes in the United States and most Canadian provinces.
"It is essential to be in sync with the rest of the country, and a co-ordinated change will be important to business, transportation and communication needs," Municipal Affairs Minister Jack Byrne said in a statement.
The change, pushed forward by a July 2005 U.S. bill intended to cut energy consumption, gives almost a month of extra daylight time during the spring, summer and early fall.
Byrne said daylight saving will now commence on the second Sunday in March, and end on the first Sunday in November.
