Nova Scotia has decided to join other provinces in extending daylight saving time next year.
It will start three weeks earlier in the spring and last one week longer in the fall, the provincial Department of Justice announced Tuesday.
Justice Minister Murray Scott said it's important to the economy that Nova Scotia match the United States when it extends daylight saving time.
"It has an impact on transportation issues and travel between the two countries," he said, "so we feel it's incumbent on the province to ensure we stay in step with the other provinces and the United States to ensure that our trade flows easier."
Advocates say the plan means more daylight hours during the winter, which in turn saves energy by decreasing the need for artificial light in the evenings.
Provinces in Eastern Canada have adopted or plan to adopt the new system.
With the change, which starts in 2007, daylight time will begin on the second Sunday in March and end on the first Sunday in November.
Currently, daylight time runs from the beginning of April to the end of October.
